Bogor Botanical Gardens
The grounds of the Bogor Presidential Palace (Istana Bogor)
were converted into a garden by
Casper George Carl Reinwardt, a German-born Dutch botanist.
The gardens opened in 1817 as the National Botanical
Garden. Today it features more then 15,000 species
of trees and plants. (An aside: In the Summer of 2006
the Indonesian Institute of Science and the Bogor Botanical
Gardens announced their plans to open four new botanical
gardens, South Sulawesi's Enrekang district, West Java's
Kuningan, South Kalimantan's Sungai Weuh and Lampung's Liwu,
